First Post on Aging Parents Blog

Well, here we go. Yesterday was terrible. Today was pretty good. You never know from one day to the next what it will be but here lately it has been more bad days than good. Don't really know where to start but at least we are started. More to come.

  1. Good morning Elvis, What a great idea. This is new to me and I didn't know to leave this public or private. I left it public to open us for suggestions and thoughts for this season of life.

  2. Today is a good day. Mom drank her juice this morning to stablize her sugar in the mornings. She sounded good and says to me oh, so thats why I'm drinking juice in the morning. I've had low sugars before. I feel good not shakey but I'm weary today. Well mom at least you feel good (not shakey)and we can get you through this weary thing.

  3. Called Mom this morning about 9:30 AM for our Wednesday morning check in. She had perked up some yesterday in the evening and was sounding pretty good last night after her Mariners won their ball game by about 8 to 2. She was tired and was ging to bed. I suggested to her that she drink one of those "Fortified" Drinks like Ensure for a night cap. But she didn't think she needed to do that. She said she had one with her food around 4PM.

Anyway, she said she was SICK this morning. Have you had your toast and tea yet? No toast but I'm working on some juice and tea. OK, you haven't eaten anything since about 4pm yesterday so you need to get something in your stomach. I'll call you back later and see if you feel any better after you eat. OK.

  4. Very interesting Elvis. Just a half an hour appart. From being weary to being sick. Hmmm...she had said she was going to eat her toast and I quess she didn't get to that yet. From what I thought was a good day to a not so good day.

  6. Talked to Mom around 2:20PM to see if she was feeling any better. She had been laying on the couch. Sounded fair. Said she had bacon and toast with juice around 10AM and then an egg around 1:45 or so and said she was just going to try and keep cool today. (warm day) She said today is not the greatest but she has had worse so it is just not as bad as it could be.

OK. Maybe it will be cooled off this evening by the time the Mariners game is on.

I hope so, that would be nice.

    Stay cool.

I will and thanks for calling. If you kids didnt keep track of me I wouldnt have anyone to do it.

OK. Talk to you later. Love you.

I love you too son. Bye.

  8. Mom called about 4:20PM all panicy and said, "You've got to come over here and help me sort out my insurance. I got some stuff here and I need some help."

Ok, I'll take a look at it when I get over there. Are you going to be up for prayer meeting tonight?

Probably not but what am I suposed to do with this health insurance paperwork?

Don't worry about it right now. It is not something that I need to drop everything and run over there for. It is probably another one of those sales offers but put it aside maybe in a big envelope for now and I'll take care of it as soon as I can get over there. (She keeps getting herself messed up with junk mail solicitations)

    OK. Bye.

  9. Called Mom about 5:40PM and reminded her that the church is air conditioned and so is our car.

Oh son I dont think I can make it.

Ok, I just had to try one more time.

I know but I dont want tp pack something over there and give it to someone else.

What do you think you have?

I dont know I just feesick and I feel it all in my head.

Well, I just thought a nice cool ride in the car and a short outing to an air conditioned prayer meeting might help.

Well, I guess you can come and get me (in a real dramatic sickly voice).

OK, I think it might be good for you. We'll be over around 6:30PM.

    Ok, Bye.

  10. Picked up Mom for Prayer meeting and all went well. She said she was weary but it was worth it and was glad she went. Topped out the night by calling her around 9:30PM or so when the Mariners won again in the bottom of the ninth. She sounded good and was getting ready for bed.

  11. Called Mom about 9:30AM for a check in to see how she was doing. She sounded good and was doing great. I asked her if she drand a "Fortified" Drink last night and she said yes she did when she got home from prayer meeting. I said good, maybe having a little something in your tummy has helped this morning. Do you have your fans going? They say its going to be a hot one again today. OH yes, I have my fans going and there is even a little breeze and that helps. Great I'm glad your feeling better today. Me too I'll take better anytime. You bet. OK, I'll talk to you later mom. OK, thanks for calling and you have a good day.

  12. Good going Elvis. Way to go helping mom along. I've stood back today a wee bit, just don't want to overload her to much. Great idea on the mail change of address. Did she pay her rent on the first? See you tomorrow morning for breakfast with ladybug, popcorn, bailiwick and jo.

  13. Called Mom about 9:20PM to see how she made it through the day and it was a very good day. She still sounded good and upbeat. She said she even got her laundry all done and folded. She said she already had her fortified drink for the night and is hoping to get up early in the morning and feel good again for another day. She even said she is looking forward to the First Friday Fellowship meeting at Church tomorrow night. AMEN!

  15. Called Mom around noon to check in with her and see how things are going today. She sounded pretty fair and said that Snickers had already called her about 3 or 4 times. [I said that we were all concerned about her after the deal yesterday and thetrip to the Doctor and all but what the PA said made a lot of sense and It sounds like you are following her instructions pretty goo and maybe that will make a difference in how you feel. She said I know and I'm trying to be better about writing EVERYTHING down on my note pad too. I said that's great Mom. Keep up the good work and I'll call you later this evening again. I love you. OK I love you too, bye.

  16. Today was a good day for mom. Called her and she sounded like our real mom. What a joy. She knows that the eating right has helped her feel better. Juice first thing in the day is the way to go. I remind her to drink her OJ while her toast is cooking and tea water is boiling. Said I'd like to bring her over here for a few days and she said that sounds great I can set out by the lake. Sounds good mom. Will work on that maybe this week. Thank you Lord for helping our mom.

  17. Well, it seems our meeting went very well, I thought. I think as we all talked it was evident we all had the same concerns for moms well being. The ball has started to roll with the Dr. and going through the process of heading into the caregiver plan. We all agree too, that it's time for her paperwork to be gone over again as to what she wants to do in her last days on this earth. Jo has a disc with all of that info in ref. to personal paperwork, living will and so on. Guess Elvis will get that. All in all it was a good day till we had a call from a friend of moms saying how sick she was. Well, it was off to the Dr.s for them to confirm she needed to drink her juice in the morning and eat the five small meals during the day. Popcorn and I got home about 8:30 Fri. night. Pooped out, but a lot was done that day.

  18. What happened to Elvis, Ladybug, and how can we get Bailiwick, and popcorn to be active with us? Have you all fallen off the earth? Mom seems to be doing well now that she's eating right.

  19. Last week was a fairly good week. Mostly good days. Yay! Mom did well with Wednesday night prayer meeting. Last Friday Mom called all upset because of some mail she got from Secure Horizon and Primary Care. I told her I could not come over and look at it because we had to go to a graduation ceremony but I was sure it was not an emergency and suggested that she take one of her "anxioty" pills and I would look at the mail the first chance I got.

Mom attended Sunday School and Morning worship with us and the noon meal - but tuckered out and Ladybug took her home before the afternoon service. Monday was a down day. She mainly just laid around on the couch. I checked her mail for her and it was all mostly "this is not a bill" stuff showing who has paid what lately on her Dr. appointments. She gets flustered so easily.

Back on 6-12-09 when we had to take Mom in to see the Physicians Assistant, due to a call from a concerned neighbor - All tests turned out OK and the PA instructed Mom to drink some orange juice when she starts feeling "sickish" and to be more diligent in eating small meals regularly and keeping a record of them. A follow up was scheduled with the Dr. and he also suggested a visit to her heart Dr. due to a change on her EKG. Baileywick took Mom in for that appointment (Ladybug and I were out of State at that time) and the heart Dr. scheduled Mom for a couple of tests on 6-29-09.

I called Mom today. It seems like she is falling back into her negative routine. I reminded her to eat the small snacks and drink her juice and try to walk with her walker to get some excercise. I also told her I was going to cancel her follow up appointment with the Primary Care Dr. this Thursday and reschedule it for NEXT Thursday so he would have the results back from the heart tests on next Monday. She seemed to get all in a tither about it but eventually settled down after I explained the reason for doing it about three times. Well, enough for now....

  20. Got a call about an hour ago from Mom. Son you have to help me. What's wrong? I don't know. I can't read my writing on my calandar. What is it that I'm supposed to do on the 29th? Well, you are suppose to wish me a happy birthday. She laughed. AND, that's the day we take you in to the heart Dr. for a couple of tests. OH, THAT's what that says... h e a r t DR. ... RIGHT!

She says - sometimes I get myself so messed up. Well, your OK now. I have instructions for you but I will write them down and bring them over to you before the appointment. OK, son. Then I reviewed her schedule for the next week or so and told her that one of these days I was going to bring a nurse over to evaluate her living conditions in regard to some possible help with a home care giver part time. WELL, I do pretty good. I know Mom but this is just to see if there are any areas where you qualify for some extra help. OK.

  22. Thanks for the update on mom. When I spoke with her this weekend she seemed to be doing well with her eating every two hours. Hope she's not out of her favorite snacks...cheese and peanut butter crackers. It sounds as if she did fine at church and it's ok to lie around for one day, but it's when it turns into every day. I always tell her to read her Bible, go for a walk, visit with her friends and eat right...every two hours.
Say, has mom said anything to you about wanting a family reunion this year? Bailiwick said she had said something to her about that. I did shoot a note back to Bailiwick, that it seemed too late for a real family reunion, but that I'd be glad to have a BBQ over here if she would like. Maybe moms just wanting to have all of her kids and grandkids together like a family reunion. Niki and Mark will be over here in Aug the weekend and week of the 8th. to
14th. We could do a mock reunion. Let me know your thoughts?

  23. Family get together in August at your place? Sure, I'm up for it.

  24. Yep! I guess it's a go for fun in the sun. BBQ! I understand that Tammy and Cindi will be able to come too. Thinking we'll start at
2pm and go from there. Say dinner around 4:30 to 5pm. Bring your own meat, and a salad or dessert. BYOB:) and we'll have plenty of pop. Pass the news on to the gang on your side and I'll take care of this side. Looking forward.

  25. Ladybug took Mom to the hairdresser last Friday for a haircut and she did just fine. Later she said she didn't feel up to attending the Friday Night Fellowship meeting at church.

Saturday, July 4th, she said she didn't feel "spunky" enough to attend the church picnic. She called that evening abut 10PM sounding just fine and told us to watch the fireworks on channel 5.

This morning, Sunday, when I called about giving her a ride to church, she said she was "so sick" she couldn't even get dressed.
